Chapter 14
Hope Against Hopeless
It was two weeks since Héro’s disappearance. Chemah was going crazy trying to figure out the kidnapper’s angle. The FBI left his home a week ago when no ransom note or phone call came. They would keep their investigation open and Chemah or Margarita should contact them immediately if either of them heard from the kidnapper. Chemah was doing an investigation of his own but was running into wall after wall. He tracked all the people who he knew made false license plates for stolen cars. Someone must have made a duplicate of Margarita’s license plate and put it on a matching car. He also asked the FBI to track the names of notorious makeup artists who specialized in identity duplication for the city’s crime families. The other obvious place to look was the special effects companies in the city.
How the hell did they get someone to look so much like Margarita that they fooled Mrs. Richmond? Chemah wondered. All the leads that he followed took him to dead ends. Margarita left him message after message asking if he had found anything out. He never had anything positive to relay to her.
Michelle stopped being a bitch when Chemah didn’t come home for two days after Héro had gone missing. He called her only once, asking that she take care of Tatsuya. He was worried that Michelle would attempt to leave him at Mrs. Richmond’s house when she had to go out and that was the last thing he wanted.
Today was the day that Michelle was to go in for the second part of the operation. Chemah had not gone with her to Doctor Johanson’s office yesterday for her final consultation. Michelle went with Mrs. Richmond and Base while Tatsuya was at school. It was a hard trip because Base never liked Mrs. Richmond and Michelle had to keep paying special attention to him so that he didn’t keep snapping at the matron whenever she got too close. Michelle wanted to be upset with Chemah but the stress of missing Héro was upon all of them. It would be selfish to think that he would stop his investigation into Héro’s whereabouts for an afternoon at her doctor’s office. She had made it clear to Chemah that she understood his position and he was relieved. He had already taken a lot of days off to make every other appointment before the first operation and was now using more of his vacation time to try to figure out what happened to his daughter. His official vacation was over five days earlier and he had to call his captain to extend it. Captain Brea already knew of the circumstances and readily allowed Chemah to stay out of the office.
Chemah could almost see Captain Brea smiling as he talked to him over the phone and told him to take all the time he wanted. Son of a bitch.
Now, as Chemah was carrying the bag that Michelle packed for the hospital down to the car, his cell phone rang.
